Italian Language Courses

Our language study courses focus on acquiring communicative skills in the Italian language as well as getting to know the Italian culture. Learning the language on-site will help you to understand and speak the language as well as easing you into learning its syntax and grammar. Our classes, held in small groups by native speakers, are conducted only in Italian. Discussions, role playing, and the occasional screening of original movies further the focus on real-life communication. Studying Italian at Villa Palagione also means getting to know the country, people, culture, and history. During the afternoons there is a cultural programme devoted to the various aspects of life in Italy. Together with your teachers (all the while speaking Italian, of course) you will be touring surrounding cities or places of historical interest, which will further your knowledge of the language in an easy and playful manner, making this course a special experience.

Language courses in French, German and English

On request Villa Palagione is also offering courses in other European languages. Our classes, held only in the respective language will be divided into small groups for beginners and advanced learners, thus enabling close contact between teacher and pupils. Discussions, cultural studies, role playing, and the occasional screening of original movies further focus on real-life communication.

Corso di scultura su alabastro

Shaping and sculpturing...

Alabaster is a creamy-white, transparent, crystalline stone from the region around Volterra that fascinated the ancient Etruscans more then 2,500 years ago. It conceals a secret inner character composed of shape, veins, colour and transparency. Concealed in broad layers of gypsum at depths of up to 100m underground, alabaster is laboriously excavated in egg-shaped blocks and then shaped in craftsmen's workshops. It can be carved, sawed, filed and sculpted, making it the perfect material for sculptures of all kinds, both for beginners and advanced artists. Volterra has gained a world reputation for its long tradition of expertise in working alabaster stone. This course, held by a local artist and sculptor, will introduce you to the beauty of this stone as well as its handling, thus assisting you with your own creative and artistic work.

Painting starts with conscious observation. The painter perceives shapes, colours, lights and shades and reproduces them on paper or canvas. Today almost everybody has a small or a big digital camera with a wide range of technical possibilities. Just push the button and there you go... but what happens afterward? How to archive, edit and present the many beautiful pictures made? This workshop is aimed at those who would like to safely handle digital photography and learn something about creative composition. Guided by an experienced photographer you will be introduced to the most important functions of your camera. Trekking

Experience nature with all your senses by walking in the Tuscan countryside. Secluded, hidden trails will lead you through scented valleys with olive groves, orchid-scattered meadows, and wheat fields colored bright red with poppies. Your walks will give you fantastic views of a seemingly endless landscape of hilltops capped with mediaeval villages and hidden forts. You will learn to read the landscape with its historical trails, get to know plants and animals and find time for chatting with the people you meet along the way. Horseriding

There is nothing more enjoyable than experiencing Tuscany on horseback. Our trips are conducted in small groups along secluded tracks through unspoiled nature - blooming meadows, breathtaking sights, rivers just waiting for you to bathe in - and all of this is combined with a healthy dose of adventure. We also stress the importance of close contact with the horse through interaction, as you groom, saddle, and bridle it. Beginners will receive riding lessons with our experienced instructors.
